The 223rd Street is an important connection between Marine View Drive and the waterfront. There is an uninterrupted visual axis down 223rd Street to the water, directly on axis with the terminus of the sea wall. The pedestrian experience can be enhanced by including ground level retail, providing continuous sidewalks and greenery, and adding public art sculptures that draw pedestrians along 223rd Street.
The marina is one of Des Moines greatest assets. The Studio's design goals included connecting park activities to marina activity, increasing community use of marina, integrating public art to landscape, providing more green to the area, introducing community activity generators and suggesting multi-purpose parking spaces that enhance daily life and functions well for special occasions.
Public art will serve as iconic and historical references throughout Des Moines. These pieces will capture the attention of pedestrians and encourage gathering spaces throughout the site.
